Safe dental treatment

At our small animal clinic, we have a strong focus on good dental hygiene and dental health. We perform most dental treatments for dogs and cats. All of our veterinarians have advanced training in dental diseases and treatment.

Thorough health examination

The animal is delivered to the clinic in the morning between 08:00 and 09:00, fasting from the previous evening. Before the animal is put under anesthesia, the veterinarian performs a thorough health examination and dental check. Furthermore, an injection of painkillers and sedatives is given so that the animal falls asleep. Furthermore, anesthetic is given intravenously. We use an infusion pump that continuously gives the animal anesthetic. This ensures that the animal receives sufficient and correct dosage throughout the procedure.

Ensure free airways

All animals under anesthesia with us are intubated to ensure a clear airway and to prevent water from the dental instruments from flowing down the throat. After intubation, the animals are given oxygen until they wake up. All animals are also equipped with a venoflon so that we can give fluids, painkillers and other medications quickly and effectively at all times. During the entire procedure, oxygen saturation in the blood, blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, temperature and mucous membranes are monitored.

Tartar

Tartar removal is performed with an ultrasonic scaler that quickly and effectively cleans the teeth without damaging the enamel. The teeth are then polished to protect the enamel. We always probe for any caries and cavities and look for pocket formations in the gums around the teeth.

Rule out disease

We also take x-rays of the teeth to rule out disease in the roots of the teeth. In many cases, the health of the teeth cannot be evaluated without a dental x-ray. If we find teeth that are damaged and need to be extracted, we always call the owner before the tooth extraction for approval and information about the price. If the animal has been under anesthesia for a long time or if we are unable to perform the tooth extraction on the same day for another reason, we set up a new appointment for the tooth extraction.

Safe awakening

After we have finished the treatment, the animal is in recovery mode where we monitor body temperature, pulse and respiration. The animal is given an injection of a recovery agent so that the animal is fully awake when the owner returns for collection. Read more about stables.

Our dental treatment includes:

Tartar removal – Tartar is very common in both dogs and cats, especially in small breeds and older animals. Over time, tartar can cause gingivitis and infection in the jawbone. This leads to pockets between the gums and teeth, as well as loose teeth.

Digital X-ray – a very important aid in providing proper dental treatment.
