Prepare with proper training before hunting with a dog
Hunting with a dog is a highly anticipated event for many – and it is important to ensure a successful experience for both humans and our four-legged companions. To ensure your dog performs at its best, a thorough training period is essential. This article provides you with valuable tips that you can take with you right into the hunting season.
To achieve optimal performance from your dog, a well-planned training routine is essential. Hunting requires a significant amount of heart and lung capacity from your dog – and this is not achieved overnight. It is important to train regularly throughout the year and gradually increase the amount of training towards the hunting season. However, you should reduce the intensity of training in the last two weeks before the hunt – so that the dog has sufficient recovery and has enough energy reserves available.

What is needed for a successful hunt with a dog?
Physical training
Make sure your dog is in good physical shape before the hunt. This includes giving it adequate exercise and training to build stamina and strength. You can add runs, swimming or playing with other dogs to your exercise routine. Also, be sure to gradually increase the intensity and duration of the training to avoid injuries. A well-trained dog will be more persistent and have a better ability to handle the physical demands of hunting.
Socialization
A well socialized dog will be more comfortable and less stressed during the hunt. Be sure to introduce your dog to different environments, sounds, people and animals from an early age. Take your dog on walks in the woods or hunting areas to get him used to hunting-related sounds and smells. Also let it interact with other dogs and people to develop social skills. A dog that is confident and relaxed in various situations will be more attentive and able to focus on the task at hand when hunting.
Remember, it's important to start training well in advance of hunting season to give your dog enough time to develop and become comfortable with hunting activities. By focusing on physical exercise, obedience training, and socialization, you can help your dog become a capable and reliable hunting companion.

Obedience training
It is important that your dog is obedient and can respond quickly to commands while hunting. Make sure to train your dog on basic commands such as sit, stay, down and come when called. Also practice hunting situations – such as walking calmly and retrieving. Use positive reinforcement – such as rewards and praise – to reinforce desired behaviors. A well-behaved dog will be a more effective hunting companion and will be better able to cooperate with you in the field.
Nutrition before and during hunting
Most people understand that dogs need more nutrition when hunting – but there are several pitfalls here. Should you stick to regular food and increase the amount during the hunt? Or maybe you should buy a high-energy food that you start giving the first day you are hunting? These are typical examples that for many will not only result in a dog with poor performance – but even stomach problems. You can gain a lot by choosing the right food and, not least, introducing it at the optimal time.
Our advice is as follows: Find a good high-energy food and spend at least 3 weeks gradually introducing this. This way you avoid digestive problems due to a sudden change in food – and you build up a nutrient depot with some subcutaneous fat. Without this nutrient depot, the body would probably have to draw extra energy from muscle mass and lose stamina and strength. When hunting, you can give a third of the daily ration at least 2 hours before physical activity and portion out the rest in smaller meals throughout the day. Also remember to drink plenty of fluids!
