Anesthesia in dogs and cats: how we monitor your animal

Anesthesia in dogs and cats is often the thing pet owners worry about most when their pet is going to be operated or to dental treatment.

How risky is anesthesia?

That is why we perform a clinical examination before each anesthesia, and adapt the medications, dosage, and monitoring to the individual patient. If you are unsure, ask us in advance.

Short-nosed breeds

Older animals and animals with known disease

Age itself is not a disease, but older patients are more likely to have heart, kidney or liver disease that affects how drugs are metabolized. If heart disease is suspected, heart examination be relevant before the anesthesia. Tell us about known diagnoses and regular medications, and we will plan the anesthesia accordingly.

Breathing is supported throughout the anesthesia.

Anesthetics can suppress respiration. An anesthetized animal may therefore ventilate less efficiently than normal, causing carbon dioxide to accumulate in the blood. Therefore, the patient is intubated, given oxygen, and ventilation is monitored throughout the anesthesia. If necessary, breathing is mechanically supported or controlled by the anesthesia machine.

We use the Mindray Veta 5, which combines gas anesthesia and ventilation. The device can control both respiratory volume and respiratory rate, with several ventilation modes and the option of pressure or volume controlled ventilation. Some patients ventilate sufficiently spontaneously, while others need more respiratory support. The veterinarian and animal caretaker assess this continuously and adapt the ventilation to the individual patient.

How we monitor anesthesia in dogs and cats

  • ECG – records the heart's electrical activity and makes it possible to detect rhythm disturbances.
  • Pulse rate – number of heartbeats per minute.
  • Oxygen saturation (SpO₂) – how much of the hemoglobin in the blood is saturated with oxygen.
  • Capnography (EtCO₂) – measures carbon dioxide at the end of exhalation and continuously shows how the patient is ventilating.
  • Blood pressure – provides important information about the circulation and can be affected by, among other things, the depth of anesthesia, medications and the patient's condition.
  • Respiratory rate – number of breathing cycles per minute.
  • Temperature – hypothermia is one of the most common complications of anesthesia, especially in small animals.

Capnography is a key part of respiratory monitoring. It continuously measures carbon dioxide in exhaled air and provides important information about ventilation, the airways and the respiratory system. Changes can thus be detected quickly and assessed together with oxygen saturation, respiratory rate and the patient's other measurements.

Blood pressure and temperature are also closely monitored. Hypotension and hypothermia are common complications during anesthesia, and early detection allows necessary measures to be taken quickly.

Safety when something unexpected happens

The monitor alerts if measured values move outside the set alarm limits. Together with the clinical monitoring, this means that changes can be detected quickly, so that we can assess and take necessary measures. The equipment does not replace the anesthesia staff – there is always someone present with the patient.

See our full equipment list.

Pain relief is part of the anesthesia

After the procedure, you will be given painkillers to take home if needed, along with instructions on dosage. Never give painkillers intended for humans – they can cause serious poisoning.

This is what monitoring looks like during anesthesia at A-Vet.

Before and after anesthesia

When a dog or cat is scheduled for anesthesia, you will be instructed on how to prepare the animal. This usually involves fasting for a certain number of hours beforehand, while water can often be withheld for longer. Instructions vary depending on age, size, and what is to be done, so follow what you are told by us – it is tailored to your dog or cat.

Also tell us if the animal is taking regular medications, has any known illnesses, or has had a reaction to anesthesia in the past. Such information affects how we administer the anesthesia.

Do you have questions about anesthesia?

Contact us if you are wondering about something.
