Our optician Elisabeth Bjørnestad has taken further training European School for Advanced Veterinary Studies in Toulouse in 2002, 2005 and 2011, which gives her special expertise in this field. The clinic has also invested in the necessary equipment to be able to perform advanced operations, including a surgical microscope that is used during all eye procedures to ensure good handling of tissue and instruments. At A-Vet Larvik, we perform advanced eye surgery, both inside the eye and in the surrounding tissue.

Eyelid surgery

General term for surgical correction of the eyelid, often used for congenital or acquired malpositions, injuries or tumors of the eyelid.

Removal of misaligned eyelashes and ectopic cilia

Ingrown hairs are treated by removing or destroying the follicle of the misaligned hair. If the growth is due to an incorrect angle of the eyelid or surrounding skin, a section of skin may be removed to correct this.

Cherry eye surgery

In cherry eye, a tear gland has prolapsed, or fallen forward, from its normal position. The gland is surgically returned to its original position and secured within the third eyelid.

Dermoid

A dermoid is a congenital skin growth that grows in the wrong place, often on the cornea or surface of the eye, and can cause irritation, tearing, and discomfort. The tissue is surgically removed.

Tear duct plastic surgery

Surgical correction of the tear duct in case of blockage or malformation, which improves drainage of tear fluid and reduces tear flow.

Entropion and ectropion surgery

In entropion, the eyelid rolls inward, causing eye hair and fur to rub against the cornea and can cause sores. In ectropion, the eyelid rolls outward, increasing the risk of eye inflammation because dirt collects in the pocket that forms and tear fluid is not distributed normally. Both conditions are corrected with plastic surgery.

Deep corneal ulcers

Very deep corneal ulcers are sometimes covered with a surgical patch to allow healing. Ulcers that are so deep that they perforate the cornea are a serious condition that must be sutured, while also attempting to restore fluid volume in the eye and treat any damage to the iris.

Bulbus extirpation

In cases of advanced glaucoma or tumor changes in the eye, it may be necessary to remove the eye itself, a so-called bulbus extirpation. A diseased eye has often caused pain and reduced vision over time, so the animal is usually healthier and happier after the procedure.

Bulbar prolapse

It happens that the eyeball falls out of the eye socket, often in connection with trauma. During surgery, the eye is placed back in place and fixed there. The optic nerve is often permanently damaged, but prompt treatment shortly after the injury gives the best chance of saving the eye itself.

Entropion surgery "before and after"

Athene had had problems with her eyes for many months. The main problem was watery eyes, and she often blinked with both eyes as you can see in the picture below. The upper eyelids lay heavily over the eyes and hair in the corner of the eye lay on the cornea. Athene was operated on, and here you see a very successful result.
