Dental X-ray on dog

The majority of all dogs and cats have or have had dental and/or oral cavity problems. When it comes to caring for canine teeth, dental x-rays are an important part of veterinary practice. By taking x-rays of the teeth, we obtain the information necessary to provide our four-legged patients with adequate treatment.

Swelling around the eye

We really learned the importance of dental X-rays when Tyra came in with swelling around her eye. The swelling disappeared as quickly as it had appeared – but reappeared around the other eye. She was examined and her teeth appeared to be fine. It was only when we took X-ray of her teeth, we saw her root problems. The roots of the molars on each side were crumbling and painful. See photo before and after the extraction.

Sick and painful tooth

The visible part of a tooth – the crown – makes up less than 50% of the entire tooth. This means that when we look at and examine a tooth, we only have half the information we need to tell whether it is healthy or not. It is very important to take dental x-rays for your dog as an addition to regular dental cleanings. While dental cleanings help remove plaque and tartar and keep teeth visibly clean, dental x-rays provide in-depth insight into your dog’s oral health that is not visible to the naked eye.

Benefits of dental x-rays

Discovers hidden problems

  1. Tooth root abscesses
  2. Hidden tooth decay
  3. Tooth fractures
  4. Tooth resorptions
  5. Bone tissue changes

Comprehensive dental health assessment

This procedure allows us to assess the condition of both visible and hidden parts of the teeth – including below the gum line.

Prevents major health problems

By identifying and treating these problems early, we can prevent more serious health challenges and help maintain the dog's overall well-being.

The dental x-ray process

Dental X-rays are a quick and simple process that is usually performed during a dental cleaning – while the dog is under anesthesia. This ensures the dog’s comfort and allows us to obtain clear and detailed images.

Some of the problems we can uncover with dog dental X-rays

When we discover a tooth that is diseased, X-rays are critical for treatment and further follow-up. For example, it is important to see what the roots look like in order to be able to extract them in the best possible way. X-rays at follow-up are necessary to be able to say something about the progress of the treatment. The X-ray machine is our and the patient's best friend during dental examinations and treatments!
